The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The post is located in the Civil Society Unit of the Governance Affairs Office at the Nairobi duty station. The incumbent will head the Civil Society Unit and report to the Director of the Governance Affairs Office and within delegated authority, the Senior Programme Officer will lead, coordinate and oversee the work of the Unit, facilitate the engagement of Major Groups and Stakeholders in the work of the United Nations Environment Assembly and its subsidiary organs, and strengthen the partnership between civil society organizations and UNEP. The incumbent will be responsible for the following specific duties: |

PROFESSIONALISM: Proven knowledge, expertise and understanding of the role and function of Major Groups and Stakeholders in the context of international cooperation. Direct experience in policies and practices relevant to the engagement and participation of Major Groups and Stakeholders in intergovernmental processes. Excellent understanding of the UN system and/or the work of the United Nations Environment Programme. Ability to conceptualize, design and implement programmes to promote the contribution of Major Groups and Stakeholders in international processes. Ability to identify key strategic issues, opportunities and risks. Ability to generate and communicate broad and compelling organizational direction. Ability to communicate clearly links between the Organization’s strategy and the work unit’s goals. Ability to analyze and interpret data in support of decision-making and convey resulting information to management. Demonstrated ability to provide innovative technical leadership by performing and/or overseeing the planning, development, and management of operation. Demonstrated ability to negotiate and apply good judgment.
