Title of Assignment:      Graphic Designer (LTA)

Hiring Section:             Communication & Advocacy

Location:                     Home based - Kenya or elsewhere

Duration:                     3 years (from September 2024 to September 2027)

Scope of Work

The LTA holder will be contracted by individual programme sections in ESARO or country office teams, and / or country office teams, and depending on the needs the main tasks are likely to include:

  • Conceive, design and produce visual communication materials, including briefs and short reports, that illustrate and enhance communication around UNICEF’s work and issues affecting children;
  • Layout and design written documents, in line with corporate brand guidance.
  • Review and select images from UNICEF’s online database, to complement design and layout, following UNICEF ethical imagery and caption guidance
  • Develop infographics for programme sections, and key advocacy themes
  • Provide all materials in raw and final files to UNICEF ESARO or the commissioning office, through electronic transfer to a public drive.  

The material will be compiled following the UNICEF technical and ethical guidelines. The material will be distributed internally at UNICEF and externally with partners for advocacy purposes, to both traditional and social media outlets.

Roles & Responsibilities

After submissions have been received, UNICEF ESARO will agree on a range of rates, based on market norms and submissions, and adapted to the scale and complexity of work. Please include quotes for the following typical jobs, and feel free to add additional:

  1. Simple layout of text document – 1-6 pages
  2. Simple layout of text document, with front and back cover. 6 – 100 pages.
  3. Layout of complex data into compelling visuals with strategic choices in color, text, and design flow.
  4. Layout of text document with photos, graphics, maps, and embedded products (e.g. newsletter) – quote per page
  5. Infographics – cost per unit
  6. Banner – cost per unit
  7. Leaflet(A5) – cost per unit
  8. Poster (A3) – cost per unit
  9. Design of web page – cost per page
  10. Design of social media post/advert – cost per post
  11. Add any other likely requests

Administrative issues

  • The LTA holders will work under the supervision of commissioning team or office and will be overseen by the Communication & Advocacy section in the ESARO.
  • The graphic designer will provide initial concepts for approval and incorporate feedback and comments from UNICEF.
  • The quality of the final product will be under review by the commissioning section.
  • The LTA holders will be home-based and need to provide their own equipment, software, and internet connectivity costs. Any specific costs needed to carry out a job, such as the purchase of specific images, must be included in the quotation for any job.
  • The final products should be delivered to UNICEF in appropriate formats as specified by the commissioning section. LTA holder should provide several formats - both medium and high resolution, and original data files.

Qualifications

  • The drafts and final documents, as well as related data, will be the property of UNICEF after completion.
  • “As per UNICEF DFAM policy, payment is made against approved deliverables. No advance payment is allowed unless in exceptional circumstances against bank guarantee, subject to a maximum of 30 per cent of the total contract value in cases where advance purchases, for example for supplies or travel, may be necessary”.
  • Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • A first-level university degree in a related field
  • A minimum of 5 years relevant professional work experience in graphic design: Print, web, graphics for social media, infographics, large-format graphics, and various other collateral materials. Video editing and graphics a distinct advantage (additional 2 years experience in lieu of a first degree).  
  • Knowledge of relevant digital software, web page design and various office applications, specifically interactive digital media including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat, with a thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), HTML, and motion graphics/animation
  • Ability to support commissioning teams/offices by turning their ideas into written briefs, without jargon, clearly and concisely, in written and oral form.
  • Proven ability to research, analyse, evaluate and synthesize information
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team and familiarity with UNICEF programmes is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships, both within and outside the organization.
